Glutathione IV Therapy in Edmonton

Our Naturopaths are experienced with IV Glutathione Treatment.

Many of our IV Therapy treatments can be followed by IV Glutathione

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that interacts with reactive oxygen species & reactive nitrogen species.

Glutathione has extremely poor bioavailability when taken orally, so IV Therapy with Glutathione is a superior way to rapidly increase cellular glutathione levels.

Glutathione’s mechanism of action involves enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) which converts Glutathione to its oxidized form "GSSG" and glutathione reductase (GR) - which reduces "GSSG" back to Glutathione "GSH".

GPx uses Selenium therefore it's common for us to include Selenium as part of a pre-treatment IV Therapy as well as Selenium orally for improving Glutathione's action typically paired with a Vitamin E complex and Vitamin C.

Glutathione has a profound role in the brain as a detoxifying agent because of the brain's vulnerability towards oxidative stress (as it utilizes 20% of the O2 consumed by the body whereas constitutes only 2% of body weight).

Depleted levels of Glutathione is implicated in the cell death in various neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis and for this reason our Naturopathic doctors use IV Glutathione therapy in these diseases.

An interesting case report was published in 2018 detailing a Parkinson's patient with reasonable benefit from moderate dose Glutathione IV Therapy.

The large spike in blood Glutathione that occurs with IV Therapy is thought to move more Glutathione into the brain as opposed to what can be achieved orally with low dose, "absorbable" liposomal Glutathione preparations.

Glutathione does have some cosmetic benefits in some patients when given Intravenously primarily. So occasionally our Naturopathic doctors use Glutathione IV Therapy for cosmetic "brightening" and "lightening" purposes.

In a 2012 study, medical students were given either glutathione capsules, or placebo for 4 weeks and a lightening of the skin was seen (the melanin indices decreased consistently) in those who received glutathione.

We usually recommend patients complement their cosmetic IV Therapy along with oral Glutathione.

IV Glutathione In-Depth:

Glutathione is found in the cytosol of all mammalian tissues

Glutathione is synthesized using constituent amino acids Glutamine, Cysteine and Glycine therefore our Naturopathic doctors often recommend acetylated Cysteine or "NAC" to increase Glutathione orally.

Glutathione is synthesized in all cell types with the maximum Glutathione synthesized and exported from the liver.

Glutathione is also responsible for detoxification of xenobiotics, either directly by conjugating or acting as a substrate in conjugation reactions for this reason our Naturopaths often use IV Glutathione or its precursors to "improve" liver function or aid in hormone removal.

GSH is known to cross the Blood Brain Barrier through Na-dependent Glutathione transporter.

So IV Therapy administration can certainly increase nervous system levels of Glutathione hence the use of Glutathione IV Therapy in neurological disorders.

In the brain, Glutathione neutralizes of redox-active metals like copper and iron as metal induced toxicity and interactions with cellular components have been associated with neurodegenerative disorders.

Glutathione is  involved in the maintenance of optimal cytokine levels.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-6 reduce with Glutathione administration therefore our Naturopaths also like IV Glutathione Therapy in Autoimmune diseases hence its use in MS.

Some data emerged in 2020 linking low levels of Glutathione to the serious manifestations of COVID-19 and case reports use oral and IV Glutathione therapy for improving COVID outcomes.

Glutathione is easily added to the end of other IV Therapy treatments.

Most commonly our Naturopaths add Glutathione to Vitamin IV Therapy or NAD+ IV Therapy treatments.

Glutathione IV FAQ

Can Glutathione IV Therapy be used for cosmetic purposes?

Glutathione given Intravenously does appear to have cosmetic benefit with repeated treatment.

The skin brightening and lightening properties of Glutathione IV Therapy are thought to be primarily from stimulation of  pheomelanin (lighter) pigment production rather than eumelanin (darker).

Are they any side effects to Glutathione IV Therapy?

Our Naturopaths have administered an estimated 1000 Glutathione IV Therapy treatments to our Edmonton patients and the incidence of side effects is essentially zero.

Occasionally pain at the site of infusion or minor shortness of breath can occur with rapid infusions of Glutathione.

How many Glutathione IV Treatments do I need?

It depends on what we're using the Glutathione for.

For inflammation our Naturopaths often suggest frequent treatment (eg. daily or every other day).

For cosmetic purposes "lightening and brightening" our Naturopathic Doctors usually suggest 1-2 IV Therapy Treatments weekly for 4-8 weeks.

Can I have any other treatments with my Glutathione IV?

Definitely. IV Glutathione is often added by our Naturopaths to the end of other IV Therapy treatments like the Myers cocktail.

In fact, our Naturopaths use a special formulation of the Myers the "Pre-Glut Myers" with nutrients such as B5, Zinc, B2, Selenium and Vitamin C to enhance activity of the IV Glutathione Therapy.

We seldom mix anything directly with the Glutathione, however, occasionally Dr. Muradov will spike the Glutathione with some B12.

Our Naturopaths will give IV NAD+ and IV Glutathione back to back for longevity.

What kinds of doses of IV Glutathione do you give?

Our Naturopaths have experience with a range of IV Glutathione doses.

Doses can range anywhere from 1 to 6 grams (1000-6000mg) although it's possible for them to be higher or lower but that's less common.

In general, our Naturopathic Doctors usually suggest doses from 2-4 grams for most neurological issues or for cosmetic purposes.
