Let's learn about Naturopathic Medicine

Top Naturopathic Medicine FAQ

What is Naturopathic Medicine? Naturopathic Medicine mixes modern western medical information with traditional therapeutics such as herbs, vitamins and supplements.

What's the difference between Naturopathic and Functional Medicine? That's actually a tricky question because both Naturopathic and Functional Medicine look to the root causes of disease for a given person so in that sense they're the same.

However, Naturopathic medicine is a larger overall system that integrates more philosophy and therapeutics.

What can a Naturopath do for you? The better question is what can't a Naturopath do for you? Just kidding.

But seriously Naturopathic Doctors provide a wide range of services and can help improve a ton of different conditions and approach medical issues with a unique perspective that's frequently different from what you've probably experienced with your medical doctor.

What can Naturopathic Doctors treat? Naturopaths can treat a lot of things from mental health issues like anxiety and depression to fairly serious concerns such as autoimmunity and cancer.

At our office in Edmonton our Naturopathic Doctors focus on addressing digestion, fatigue, hormones, mood and geek out when it comes to IV Therapy and Hyperbaric medicine.

What are the disadvantages of Naturopathic Medicine? In all honesty, it's likely the significant out of pocket costs.

At a clinic like ours we focus a lot on testing (hormones, nutrients, allergies) which can get very pricey because our Naturopaths use a lot of international laboratory testing.

Also, IV Therapy and Hyperbaric medicine are fairly expensive treatments which we focus on.

The Naturopath Principles

First do no harm - Naturopathic Doctors utilize gentle, naturally derived treatment methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects.

In particular at our office, our Naturopaths use carefully chosen, precisely dosed vitamins, minerals and supplements and do drug-nutrient interaction testing prior to issuing our recommendations.

Vis Medicatrix Naturae (healing power of nature) - Naturopaths believe the body has a tremendous inherent capacity to heal itself if you give it the right tools.  Nutrients and dietary changes are some of the paramount "tools" our Naturopathic doctors supply our patients to facilitate healing.

Identify and treat the cause - This is where Functional Medicine and Naturopathic medicine cross paths. At our office, our Naturopaths frequently run substantial laboratory tests to identify the causes of your concerns.

Treat the whole person - Naturopaths consider each person as extremely unique and take into account physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors. For example, the first visit at our Edmonton office is frequently 30-60 minutes to understand all the factors in your particular case.

Docere (Doctor as Teacher) - Naturopathic doctors teach their patients and will assist you in understanding health and illness in your particular case.

Advanced Naturopathic Treatments

IV Therapy:

Effective: IV therapy is more effective than oral treatments with the same nutrients for correcting cellular nutrient deficits and IV therapy ensures 100% absorption every single time.

Rapid Results:  IV Therapy gets patients feeling better, faster. Our Naturopathic Doctors have administered thousands of IV Therapy treatments at our Edmonton clinic and have seen faster results with this than any other oral modality.

Clinical breakthroughs: IV Therapy can often provide a breakthrough for patients where other treatments have failed.  Fatigue and mood are the two most frequently responsive clinical conditions.

Durability: IV Therapy can have long term benefits. Most of our IV Therapy drips are administered once weekly initially with booster treatments given every 4-8 weeks. However, some patients are able to maintain benefits for prolonged periods of time.

Safety: IV Therapy is safe. In fact our Naturopathic doctors administered literally thousands of treatments at our Edmonton offices with a handful of non-serious adverse effects.

Our Therapies

NAD+

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) is present in all cells of the body and is essential for cell viability and function.

NAD+ is crucial in the production of energy cycles of the body and activates SIRTUIN pathways which are involved in life extension and longevity. A 2019 study demonstrated that it is rapidly taken up out of the blood.

PARP enzymes are though to be activated by NAD+, which repair DNA damage and and are linked to longer lifespan.

NAD+ frequently takes 1-3 hours to administer and overall are well tolerated with only some nausea if  given too rapidly and are easily combined with vitamin treatments for an enhanced effect.

Our Naturopathic Doctors typically start most patients at 250mg of NAD+ for their first treatment.

With regards to fatigue, many patients see improvements in their energy within 24 hours after NAD treatment and often require "booster" treatments in 2-4 weeks.

Vitamin Cocktails

Giving B-Vitamins, Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin C.

At our Edmonton office, we've ramped up the doses of B-Vitamins, and added Riboflavin (B2) and use a small volume format.

In terms of tolerance, the Vitamin Therapy is extremely well tolerated.  The most common issue is that, due to its concentration, it can be painful at the administration site which can be prevented with appropriate dilution.

Vitamin Therapy usually gives its effects within 24 hours and usually lasts for 3-5 days after the first treatment.

It's typically repeated 1x weekly for 3-4 weeks to build an effect.

It's then given 1x every 4-8 weeks to maintain the effect.

Vitamin Cocktails were suggested originally for the following conditions: fatigue, fibromyalgia, sinusitis, hives, asthma, migraines, upper respiratory tract infections, cardiovascular disease and depression and our Naturopathic doctors have confirmed its use in each and every one of these conditions and many more :)

Glutathione

Glutathione is found in all cells of the body with the highest levels in the liver and it's made from three amino acids: glutamate, glycine and cysteine.

Glutathione is considered the body's master "anti-oxidant."

Glutathione Therapy is frequently considered for detoxification, inflammation, skin health, longevity, immunity and neurological conditions.

For skin health, Glutathione is frequently combined with Vitamin C.

Glutathione can often be easily added to the end of many of our other treatments.

Administration times for Glutathione is usually less than 15 minutes and is frequently given 1-3x weekly.

Vitamin C

As you likely know, Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and has a role in immune function and is capable of antiviral and antibacterial effects as well.

At our office, our Naturopathic Doctors use both low dose and high dose Vitamin C Therapy.

Low dose Vitamin C frequently refers to doses between 2.5 - 20 grams which can be immune boosting and anti-viral with anti-oxidant effects and is frequently used with Glutathione for skin health

High dose Vitamin C refers to doses between 25 - 125 grams and is used primarily for either chronic infections or as an adjunctive cancer support.

Chronic Viral infections such as EBV and HHV-6 are, in our experience, frequenty Vitamin C responsive.

Case reports exist showing benefit for Intravenous Vitamin C in: Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Liver Cancer, Lymphoma, Kidney Cancer, Bladder Cancer, GBM and Pancreatic Cancer. Vitamin C can often safely be administered alongside numerous chemotherapies.

What's the difference between Naturopath and Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopath and Naturopathic Doctor are interchangeable terms.

Naturopathic colleges merge standard western diagnosis and treatment with alternative approaches such as herbs, dietary modification, and vitamin and mineral repletion. Homeopathy and Chinese medicine are also taught, but for the most part the Naturopathic Doctors at TruMed do not use these.

It's important to note that Naturopaths are not "MD" medical doctors as we have a 'ND' designation.

Naturopathic Doctors typically have much longer consultations (30-60 minutes) than MDs, so we frequently dive deeper into your case.  Furthermore, the focus of your ND is usually to uncover the cause of your concerns versus just addressing symptoms.
